Aroma/Flavor: black currant/plum/coriander/sage/hazelnut/cocoa powder/toffee
Texture: bright/balanced/fleshy/spicy/chewy
Production Method
Grapes are from estate Red Mountain AVA vineyards within a two-mile radius of the winery: Hedges, Bel’ Villa, Les Gosses and Jolet. The wine was destemmed and partially crushed into stainless steel fermenters where it was pumped over twice daily until desired tannin extraction was achieved. It was then pressed to barrels where it underwent malo-lactic fermentation, then racked off lees and 100% was barrel aged until bottling in 44% New oak barrels (58% American/40% French/2% Hungarian)
Harvest Notes
2023 started with a drier, mild spring, which resulted in slightly delayed bud break. Then the heat started in May and June and the grapes had a lot of growth. Everything was back on track for veraison, which happened in the last week of July, first week of August. We saw a nicely spread-out maturation and harvest period in September and October, which balanced yields. 2023 should prove to be a classic Washington State vintage, especially for Red Mountain.

Led by a passion for authenticity and a deep connection to the land they call home, the Hedges Family epitomizes the modern wine estate. A blend of rich cultural upbringings and a shared love for creating beautiful wine converge at the heart of bucolic Red Mountain, fostering a true homegrown approach to farming and viticulture. Hedges Family Estate unites past and present, evolving tradition for generations to come.
The unique geography of Red Mountain speaks volumes… The language of this distinct land translates to viticulture with the same character and complexity of the grapes themselves. We consider our collection of wines a collaboration between people and place; a true expression of origin and the unified culture of farm and family.

Labrat reporting for duty. I was both excited and nervous when I got the email that I was a labrat this week. Nervous because I don’t have the fancy words or the palate to describe wine-I do have vast experience drinking it though and I know what I like. No worries on the one-I not only liked it, I loved it! I would say the nose is one of the best parts of enjoying this one-every sip was most pleasant, almost floral, although not in the least sweet. It is a lovely medium bodied wine which I am most excited to buy.

@rugillespie thanks for the kind comments. We are the OG on Red Mountain and embracing every gift she gives us. Sarah does an amazing job of harnessing the power and grip we get on Red Mountain. I love this 2023 BLend.
90 point average wine for all vintages according to wine-searcher.
Fairly standard BDX blend. Not a lot of petit verdot, so should drink well young. Many reviewers talk about cherries and herbs. Acidity should be soft with malolactic fermentation. Alcohol is somewhat restrained for this style in modern times at 14%, maybe an effect of being Washington and not California (though red mountain is warm). Certified biodynamic. Small grapes, so a lot of skin to grape ratio will mean robust structure.
Suckling gives this vintage 93 points. He’s usually a few points high, so I think true to form, holds to the average.
Cellar Tracker reviews are 89-91 points for the last few vintages, which is actually outstanding, cellar tracker is very harsh and usually is like 3 points lower than many other sources.
Not a screaming deal, other online prices for ‘22 or ‘23 show $25-30 a bottle, but sounds like a great wine. Still a good discount, particularly for a case.
I am in for this one. If you like bordeaux blends that drink fresh this is probably a great buy for you.
@afwaller thanks for your insight and well said on all counts. It is very warm on Red Mtn but gets significantly cooler at night so helping with freshness and bright acidity. Our blend changes every vintage and we also add a little Syrah for texture.
afwaller mentions the Suckling review, the words to go with the 93…A good-value, medium-bodied, estate red blend with gentle tannins, bright acidity and juicy red and black cherry flavors surrounding a core of minerality. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 5/26
Loving this Estate Red Blend. It changes every year depending on what grapes are performing better for this wine. I think this wine exemplifies Red Mtn and Sarah’s style of winemaking. This wine has power, freshness, acidity and structure.!!
