2022 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Dark briary fruit of white pepper, cedar, currents, grilled steak, spicy, raspberry, sage, and plum lead to an extractive fleshy structure with firm tannin and a balanced long lingering finish.
Vineyard/Vintage Notes
Amador County is extremely well suited to Zinfandel. Zinfandel has been grown in the Amador County Gold Rush area for over 150 years. These old head pruned dryland farmed vineyards produce low yields of extractive flavorful Zinfandel.
Winemaker’s Notes
Grown on steep mountainous terrain in the higher elevations of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California. The growing season started off with a hard spring frost on April the 12 killing 80% of the new shoot growth. This produced a small crop. We had a dry summer with a mid-harvest rain. The best wines in Amador are always made after the first fall rain. What was left after the frost ripened nicely to produce excellent extractive fruit.
After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. (Oh, and Scott’s not too shabby with a pen, either.)

@rjquillin Interesting where you likely heard that phrase before! But if you leave off the “site” designation and just search for “extractive fruit”, you do get an explanation (that happens to reference Scott Harvey Wines).
@Mark_L@rjquillin@ScottHarveyWine So too much time on my hands this morning and the search is taking me in all directions… are we speaking of fruit that Mr Harvey feels is ripe…pun intended…for extraction?
“Excellent extractive fruit” means grapes that are ripe but not over ripe that produce wine with full varietal flavor and a lot of it. Extractive is lots of varietal flavor.

2022 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel - $20 = 8.00%
Hi Everyone, As always it is so nice to be communicating with the Casemates community. I’m around all day and will be looking in to answer any questions. We already have one. “What is the definition of extractive fruit?” It is when the grapes are ripe but not over ripe while giving up to produce large amounts of varietal and regional flavor to make a big full bodied and flavorful wine. Cheers, Scott
Hi Everyone, This is the end of the 2022 Mt. Selection Zinfandel. After this we will be moving to the 2023 which I just bottled last month. Cheers, Scott
Love Scott Harvey wines and the Mountain Zin is a favorite. My cellar is full and I even have some of these down there already, otherwise it would be an auto buy.
Not a rat but we drank a bottle of this tonight. I would have never come up with the list in the notes but there’s some brambly spice and maybe some plum. Taste is similar, the cedar/bramble/pepper finishes with a little plum, medium tannins. Like all Scott’s wines this will age and become more integrated and be amazing for 8-12 more years. It’s nice now but I’ll save the rest of mine for a few years.
@ElKabong haha. I ended up opening a bottle tonight as well though I had some different tasting notes. I had a lot more fruit, dark cherries, currants, maybe some sweet tobacco, pepper. The smell on the pop was wonderful!! Totally agree with you, It’ll be good for at least a few more years. Mild, well integrated tannins, it hits a very nice place with like 20 minutes of air. I have a couple bottles of the 2021 and the 2022 left. I’ll be making room for the 2023.
@ElKabong You do get a tiny bit of that green pepper on the pop and pour that I usually taste in young cabs and zins, but it fades with some air and the fruit takes over more.
Yeah, tonight was hamburgers with the grandkids. Sips of wine mixed with chaos. It was never a stop and savor night. It seemed to disappear quickly. Wife and I had half a glass after a trip to the park and bedtime. Usually I find Scott’s zins shoe more fruit with time.

Likely I’ve heard this phrase before, but don’t really remember, so, what exactly (or nearly so) does it really mean for a winemaker or consumer?

@rjquillin @ScottHarveyWine similar to, but different than concentration? Maceration is where/when the extraction occurs, the process?
@rjquillin @ScottHarveyWine So maybe Scott didn’t really want to answer questions after all…

Got some on hold - now, when does the Barbera show up?
That’s up to WineDavid and Jana. We ran out of the 2022 Mt. Selection Barbera and just released the 2023. Cheers, Scott
@ScottHarveyWine What about InZinerator? We are a 3-generation fan of it! Haven’t seen it here since 2024 unless I missed it.
@lynnrae1 We just bottled the new 2023 InZinerator. Also, something for Jana and WineDavid to work out. Cheers, Scott

tease…
What? No Rats… don’t need 'em.
Of all the Scott Harvey Zins I’ve had, I prefer the Mountain Selection…Ordered.

Popped a 2018 of this one (mentioned in the What Are You Drinking thread). Doing very nicely!
Summer time = bbq time
Zinfandel = bbq wine
Scott Harvey = big time zin wine!
at risk of bringing up old memories, “W00T!”

Can’t say no to a Scott Harvey zin, so I put some on Summer hold. Can’t wait to get it in October!
