2019 Dorina Lindemann Touriga Nacional “Jovem”, Quinta da Plansel, Portugal
Tasting Notes
Flavor of dark fruits, a touch of red current and floral notes. A wine with a fine, fruity spicy palate. Balanced structure with soft tannins.
This fruit is sourced from a new estate vineyard planting of 12 hectares of Touriga Nacional. The soils are residual granite and metamorphic sedimentary soils. No herbicides are used. Touriga Nacional is a wine with an intense aroma of flowers, especially orange blossom and violets. There is great freshness & elegance from the grape in this bottling. “Jovem” means young vines in Portuguese.
Producer Info
In the late 1970’s Hans Jörg Böhm, a German viticulturist of tremendous energy and passion, arrived to Portugal to undertake the daunting task of cataloging the Portuguese wine varietals. He suspected there were a number of lesser-known and unidentified varieties with great potential – he discovered about 300 different varietals and opened the first vine nursery in Portugal, dubbed “Evora” in the region of Alentejo. This knowledge, passion and sense of purpose, to celebrate and ensure the future of indigenous varietals was passed to his daughter Dorina Lindemann, herself a young enologist who in 1997 founded the winery Quinta da Plansel.
Dorina’s work is focused on non-varietal wines and blends of the most significant grapes of northern Portugal: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Touriga Franca. In 2001, she launched the first single varietal wines in Portugal and continues to champion these iconic grape varieties.
Touriga Nacional
Touriga Nacional is quickly becoming recognized as Portugal’s most celebrated grape variety - at once bold and lush with opulent aromatics and a range of textures. The clusters of berries are small, thick-skinned and famously resistant to the country’s often intense summertime heat, producing wines that remain fresh & balanced.

When Hans Jörg Böhm left the Rhine Palatinate and moved to the Alentejo, he consciously subscribed to a philosophy which goes beyond adopting a short-term economic perspective. His daughter Dorina and granddaughters Julia and Luísa have adopted the same approach. Professional work in viticulture must be based on solid technical expertise, which often has to be renewed and developed further in persistent pursuit of even better alternatives.
Quinta da Plansel stands firmly behind constantly promoting exchanges of experience within the spheres of international scientific progress and cultural excellence. By the same token, it remains outspoken against the lack of tolerance for innovative ideas, particularly in respect of attempts to preserve elitist academic approaches in this scientific and professional discipline.
As a result of our targeted efforts, our grapevine varieties were the first to be officially recognized in Portugal, and have also gained certified recognition in advanced wine-growing countries in the new world of wine.

Rats! No rats??
I LOVE Portuguese wines, almost always good-to-great quality at nice price points. Especially the Touriga.
But…… need some confirmation, especially with a moniker of “young vines.”
I’m in NC, which is a so-so appellation at best, and all too familiar with young vines. Like chewing on a green stick! Better now than 15 years ago, age and aided by many vineyards going to Tannat and even Portuguese vararitals.
I got lucky this week when I was chosen to rat the Dorina Lindemann Touriga Nacional 2019 Portuguese red wine. I was not familiar with the Touriga Nacional grape variety, but I generally enjoy Portuguese wines, so this was definitely up my alley.
The grapes are described by the winery as “Jovem” or “young”. I think that is evident in the nose and flavor, but it’s not a negative. I opened this bottle for my weekly Girls’ Night, and we enjoyed it with a loaf of French bread and some coq au vin.
All four of us agreed that initially (the wine had been in the decanter for about 10 minutes — we were eager) the nose was slightly perfumey on top of notes of mixed berries and an earthy cacao. The color is a beautiful gem-tone red, with medium-bodied, fairly fast moving legs. A quick first taste was a little tight, with flavors of red current and spice, without excess alcohol.
As we gave it time to open up it became rounder and more complex, but still retained its “young” demeanor. By that, I mean I didn’t pick up on the dark fruits that Dorina Lindemann claims in the description. I didn’t find it to be jammy or with a long finish that often results in older grapes. The nose became more perfumey and floral. I definitely got the violet notes. The tannins became softer, more velvety, and the fruit remained bright. All four of us found the flavor to be more red fruits, like red currant, sweetened cranberry, and raspberry, than dark fruits. The finish gave us baking spices, with two of us identifying mace.
All four of us greatly enjoyed the wine and agreed we’d like to drink more. At the Casemates price point, I think this is a strong buy. It’s a delicious and unique wine that would complement cold summer dishes, salty Spanish cheeses, and medium-rich meals that can use a bright wine to refresh the palate.
Jörg is from the same area of Germany in the Rheinland Pflaz where I went to winemaking school. I liked the Labrat report. Jana and I were just in Portugal and loved the dry red wines. Touriga Nacional is one of the varieties I use for our Forte late bottled vintage fortified wine. I’m in.
Wondering how the ship now inventory and the ship later inventory is being handled, twas a bit of a cluster last year if I recall…also wasn’t the summer ship now option expedited shipping last year? Don’t see that mentioned unless I’m off base

If Scott Harvey is “In”(Zin?), I’m in (Touriga)!
